Logo Template Submission Tips

GraphicRiver reviewer Kailoon has put together some useful tips & tricks to help you prepare your submission for the Logo Templates category on GraphicRiver. As well as referring to our Logo Template Upload Instructions, the useful information below will also help authors avoid getting their file rejected.

Simplicity – While authors generally try to create something simple, simple doesn’t mean a basic square will do the job. You will need a concept before creating the ‘shape’.

Complexity – Some authors try to provide a very unique logo with lots of effects applied to it, such as gradients and drop shadows etc. Authors need to consider how well the logo will print also.

Combination – There are many good logos but when it is combined with a poor choice of font, it will fail to make your logo stand out from the crowd. Be sure to give your font and typography as much attention as your actual logo.

Flexibility – One common reason why we reject logo submissions is because of a lack of flexibility. For example, a container that can’t accommodate a longer business name, a tiny space that may cause a problem in small scale printing, a logo which requires a fix to a letter/character to make it work. Logo templates are different from logos. It should be easy to use and flexible enough for various type of purposes.

Concept – It’s always a good practice to start your logo template with a basic concept. A good practice to create conceptual logo templates is to provide more options of how it can be implemented in different options/situations. If you can’t think of any, then this will reduce the utility to the customer and may impact the success of your logo.

Illustration & Logo templates – There is a huge difference between normal illustrations & logo templates. You can’t simply have a silhouette of a man standing beside a business name and call it a logo template. A logo is more like a complete branding experience in that it should be part of an idea and it should mean something.

Variations – We recommend including multiple variations for a logo template. Perhaps provide multicolor versions, a single color version, black & white versions or a version with a different perspective. You can also play with the placement of the elements, for example horizontal and vertical versions, an inverse version or perhaps place the logo within a shape ( circle / square / triangle etc ).

Glossy / Special Effects – Authors tend to add multiple special effects to a logo which is actually really bad practice. A good logo can be very effective when it is kept simple and can deliver a message.

Finally, a couple of very important reminders about your submission that authors need to be mindful of before they submit Logo Templates to GraphicRiver are the following. For a full list of submission requirements however, please read our full upload instructions:

Main file should always be in .EPS or .PSD with editable text.

Item description example: While this is not a mandatory requirement, here’s a great starting point for your item description that gives customers all the info they need about your logo:
Usage: Perfect for fresh bars, drinks, fruits and other healthy products.
Font: Font Name – url to purchase / download the font
Files included: EPS, PSD, PDF

Useful Templates

We have provided the following files/templates that you can download/use for the purpose of seeing how to construct your main file with variations as well as displaying your preview image.

EPS Starter Kit: logo_template_starterkit_v1.eps

Step 1: Prepare Your File

Organize your design into easy to edit, clearly labeled layers. Please remember that the more editable your file is, the more valuable it is to buyers. Double check that you’ve provided organized and clearly labeled layers, help documents, and made it as easy as possible for buyers to edit and customize your work.

Make sure you have all the information about any assets used in the file–you’ll need this later for the Notes to Reviewers! If your assets are linked to the main file, be certain you’ve included them in your zip.

Create useful, written instructions in English for the buyer in either pdf, doc, txt, or html format. Keep in mind that buyers may have little to no familiarity with design software, so incorporate clear explanations and visuals when necessary. You may create video or flash instructions in addition to, but not instead of text instructions. Read more.

Make sure your item is optimized for the web! If you provide any rasterized elements like JPGs or PNGs, make sure they’re optimized for use on websites.

Files often react differently upon editing or printing. Please be sure to test and sample your file thoroughly.
Helpful Hint: It’s helpful if you only upload 1-4 items at a time to avoid getting many files rejected for a simple mistake.
Want more helpful hints on getting approved? Read GraphicRiver’s two part series: Get Approved , and Get Approved Part Two.

Step 2: Make Sure That You and Your File Don’t Get Banned

Do not upload borrowed assets. Note: many freebies and downloads from stock sites are not licensed for redistribution and resale. When in doubt, get permission from the asset author or make your own.

Only use images, photos, icons, brushes, filters, textures, patterns, and other assets which you have the rights to use. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have the rights to use any materials. We will remove or reject your file if it violates another person’s copyright or trademark. Please review this article for more information on acceptable assets.

Do not create a file based on a tutorial or traced from an existing image.

You may not copy the design, style, or technique of files from GraphicRiver or elsewhere. For Web Elements, this means you also may not copy designs from other websites. There is a fine line between being inspired by another file and copying it. If you upload a file that looks too similar to another file, it will be removed and you will receive a warning.

Do not use logos, trademarks, or other copyright-protected materials in the file.

Step 3: Upload Your Files

Title and description

Write your title and description in the text areas. Please note that your description must accurately describe all elements of your main file–be especially careful to mention anything shown in the preview which is not included in the zip (example photos, color variations, mock-ups) or note if any main element is rasterized or not editable. Failure to accurately describe your item might result in buyer refund requests or your item getting disabled. Get some tips.

Click Preview Description to make sure it looks right.

Thumbnail

Create an 80 x 80 pixel JPG or PNG thumbnail.

Click Upload and select the thumbnail on your computer.

Under the word “Thumbnail,” click the dropdown and select the thumbnail.

Preview Image.

Create an 590 pixel wide jpg preview image. JPGs may be any height, but we recommend 590×700 pixels for optimal viewing. Note: files MUST be a JPG–PNGs or GIFs will not display correctly.
Tip: When a buyer hovers over your item’s thumbnail, if you have an extremely long preview, only the top portion of it will show on hover. Read about what makes a good preview image.

Click Upload and select the preview image on your computer.

Under the words “Preview Image”, click the dropdown and select the preview image.

OPTIONAL: Preview Image Set

If you want to provide additional preview images for potential buyers, you can create a Preview Image Set. Create a zip containing additional JPG images which are no larger than 900×900 pixels. NOTE: Preview Image Sets must be zip files, even if you’re only providing one additional image.

Name the 900×900 pixel JPG files in the order which you want them to appear, using double digits. For example: 01_preview1.jpg, 02_preview2.jpg, 03_closeup.jpg… NOTE: Please do NOT include any other files than the preview JPGs, and do not include your preview JPGs in your main zip.

Under the words “Preview Image Set” click the dropdown and select your preview set zip.

Main Files

Zip (not Rar) all the files the buyer will need, including all the files and instructions. Files should be organized within the zip as logically as possible. Name it main.zip.

Click Upload and select main.zip on your computer.

Under the word “Main File(s)” click the dropdown and select main.zip.

Helpful Hint - To save time, instead of uploading your thumbnail, preview image, preview source, and main files individually, you can upload them all at once. Just click upload and ctrl+click all the files.

Categories & Attributes

Select a category.

Select what version of Adobe Creative Suite your files open in.

Write the resolution, in pixels, in the text box under where it says “Image Resolution”. Note: The form does not accept multiple resolutions. Please only list the dimensions of one work–your main file, even if you have multiples. For Web Elements, please list your largest element’s size.

If your file is layered with editable elements, select “Yes” from the “Layered?” dropdown. Note: Please do NOT choose layered if you’ve merely provided a layered PSD to organize all your rasterized and/or uneditable pieces, or if most of the elements are uneditable.

Select your file formats included in the ZIP. Please include ALL formats you’ve provided. If you have a particular format that is not included (such as one of many varied add-on formats) please choose the software format that it would be used with. (i.e., ABR brush files would be used in Photoshop PSDs.)

Tags

Write relevant tags, separated by commas, in each of the three tag fields. Please note that tags may contain multiple words. ex: “cross-media” or “community service”

Make sure each tag is spelled correctly (using American Standard English).

Limit your tags across all three categories to 15 total, not 15 per category.

Helpful Hint - Effective and relevant tagging can make the difference between 10 and 100 sales. Put yourself in the shoes of a potential buyer looking for your file. Try to imagine what they’d search for. Test out that search. Ask the people around you what they would search for.

Notes to the Reviewer

When using images containing recognizable human faces or private locations, link to a scanned version of a filled out and signed modelor location release. Read more.

Read the Disclaimer and Click the Checkbox.

Click Upload and Make Some Money! Please note that reviewing your file may take up to a week.

Uploading a file for the first time? Not sure what all those attributes and settings mean for your file? We’ve gathered all the terms in one place with helpful explainations to help you get your file uploaded and reviewed!

File Attributes

Category. Each upload category has descriptive sub-categories to help buyers who are browsing for files. Is your Graphic a “background” or is it a “Character”? Make sure you pick a sub-category that best describes the style or subject of your file.

Pixel Dimensions. This attribute describes how big your file is in pixels. You’ll want to provide the width and height of your image in a basic format, like 800×600 for 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels tall. If you are submitting a file pack or an image that contains multiple, unconnected elements (like a button or icon set), you only need to provide one size – usually for your largest item. You can provide additional dimensions in the File Description to help buyers know what to expect! Note: This attribute is not required for Vectors.

Print Dimensions. This optional attribute is the exact size which your file will be if printed, in inches, if printed at the standard 300dpi. Do not include bleeds in this measurement. Note: This is only required on files which have been designed for printing, such as Print Templates.

Layered? Indicate whether your item is fully layered and editable. This attribute is set to “No” by default. Note that if you choose “Yes,” your item needs to contain clearly labeled and organized layers with editable elements. Note: In order for a Vector file to be considered layered, layers must be clearly labeled and grouped with helpful organization.

Tileable? Indicate whether your item can be tiled in a seamless manner. This attribute is set to “No” by default. If your item is intended to be used as a tileable texture or pattern and is seamless, choose “Yes.”

Compatible OS. This attribute is only used in Fonts. Indicate which OS (Mac or PC) the font is designed for.

Optimum Size. This attribute is only used in Fonts. Indicate the ideal size for the font’s use, in points or pixels. E.g. 12pt, 8px.

Minimum Adobe CS. The minimum Adobe Creative Suite version compatible with ALL the features of your file. Note that certain modern features like Smart Objects and Smart Filters are only compatible with newer versions.

Files Included. The format of files provided in your item. Important: If some included formats are not as editable as the main file (such as providing rasterized versions of vector files), it is the author’s responsibility to note the differences in the File Description. Uneditable formats are a common cause for buyer refunds, so it is helpful to clearly describe your files.

File Tags

Tags are very important tools in order to help buyers find your file. Take time to pick accurate, descriptive tags for your file. All tags should use American English spelling and be single words. (E.g., “dog” rather than “fuzzy dog.”)

Theme tags should describe the concept, industry, or idea related to the file. Themes are not what’s physically depicted in the item itself (use Subject for that), but are what the graphic is related to or an idea it is trying to communicate. E.g. business, peace, holiday, celebration.

Subject tags are what is actually depicted in the graphic. E.g. dog, phone, car, sunset, city.

Color tags list the dominate color in an item. Minor or accent colors don’t need to be listed. E.g., gray, blue, red, green.

Style tags describe the design or illustrative style of the file. Try to avoid generic terms like “professional” or “web 2.0″ and choose terms that accurately reflect the design choices made. E.g., grunge, vintage, mod, comic, hand drawn.

Usage tags describe the purpose for which the items were designed to be used. E.g. proposal, advertising, wedding.

Double dippin' means do the work once and get paid for it twice or more.

There are many factors involved when it comes to being a top author, but one of the big ones is using your time efficiently. This isn’t like a normal job where you can zone out for an hour and still collect the same paycheck. If you’re not working, you’re not making money. On the other hand, if you can do twice as much in the same amount of time, you can make twice as much.

One technique I like to use to improve my stock output is double dippin’. What do I mean by that? I mean do the work once and get paid for it twice or more. Here’s an example: One of my very first stock items was an illustration of a clock face. Most authors would stop there and move on to the next file. Instead, I created a Flash version of the clock. With the same graphics and similar code I built a set of Flash timezone clocks. ActionScript is pretty similar to JavaScript so I also built a Unity3d version and have a jQuery one in the works. Did I stop there? No, that same clock is on the wall of my Flash Fine Art Gallery. Did I stop there? Well… yes, but I’m sure it’ll show it’s face again on the Envato marketplaces.

You may be saying – “That’s all fine and good, but how does this apply to me?” This concept can work on just about all of the marketplaces. It even makes sense between different files on the same marketplace. Here are some double dippin’ ideas:

WordPress, HTML, and Flash Developers

Create customizable scrollbars, contact forms, and image galleries (in classes if you’re using Flash).

Reuse modified versions in every theme or template you create. If necessary, improve them, but try not to start from scratch unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Unity3d Developers & 3d Modelers

The Unity3d category on ActiveDen and the 3d Model category on 3dOcean go hand in hand. If you create a 3d model and upload it to 3dOcean, why not bring it to life in Unity and sell it on ActiveDen?

Image Galleries

Create your gallery.

Use screenshots of your other files to populate the gallery in the preview file. First of all, it makes your gallery look nice. Also, even if they don’t buy your gallery, they may still buy your other files!

Textures

Did you know that 3dOcean and GraphicRiver both sell textures? The requirements differ slightly, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t consider uploading all your textures to both sites.

For Anyone

Write a premium tutorial for any of the Tuts+ sites.

Sell that same tutorial on the Tuts Marketplace.

Use what you taught in the tutorial to make a file, add to it to make it unique, and sell it on ActiveDen, 3dOcean, or whatever Envato marketplace it would fit best on.

WordPress, HTML Developers

If your template got accepted to ThemeForest, the design would have to be pretty great. If so, why not upload the design to the PSD Templates category?

This list of examples is by no means complete. I’m sure there are dozens of other ways to double dip. This article is just to get the wheels turning. Just remember, selling stock is all about working efficiently. If you reuse your work, you’ll save time and make more money!

Do you double dip? Show us here: http://activeden.net/forums/thread/do-you-double-dip/33768

Standards for quality and acceptance for the Isolated Objects category on GraphicRiver.

Image Type

All submissions to the Isolated Objects category must be photographed with a camera. Graphics, illustrations and 3D Renders are not accepted in the Isolated Objects category.

Image Quality
Your photograph should be at least 4.0 megapixels (i.e. a minimum of 2000px x 2000px). The “quality” of your photograph should be to a similar standard you may find in a stock photography library. As “quality” is subjective, here is some specific criteria we will look for in your submission, so always ensure your photograph meets the criteria below before submitting it to us:

Is your object in focus, and free of blur when viewed at 100%? We always recommend that objects are photographed using a tripod to minimize blur.

Is your photograph exposed correctly? Overexposed or underexposed photographs will be rejected.

Are there excessive artifacts in your image when viewed at 100%? If so, your image may be compressed too heavily or over-sharpened.

Is your object clipped/masked effectively? See our Clipping and Masking section below for more details.

Clipping/Masking
In order for your photographed object to be eligible for the Isolated Objects category, it obviously has to be isolated from its background! If you are not sure how to clip/mask an object from its background, here are some recommended tutorials that cover some of the important principles, tools and techniques in Photoshop:

Masking 101

Masking Basics in Photoshop 5

Masking Hair in Photoshop CS5

5 Great Background Masking Techniques in Photoshop

Ultimately, what we are looking for are clean, clear and realistic edges around your object. Jagged, pixelated, unnatural edges or poorly executed masking/clipping will result in your file getting rejected.

Trademarks
Your isolated object must not contain any trademarks or company logos. Trademarks must be removed from your images/photographs before submitting to us. For example, let’s say you have taken a photograph of a T-Shirt with a small logo/emblem on the front of the shirt. Digitally remove the logo/emblem from the T-Shirt so that the shirt becomes generic and is not branded in any way.

Utility
Your submission must always have some utility to the customer. If you upload something that is excessively abstract with little use to the customer, we reserve the right to reject your submission.

File Format
Your file must always be in PSD format. Ideally, it should contain two layers. The top layer will contain your isolated/masked, photographed object, and the bottom layer should be transparent. This not only helps the reviewer when reviewing your submission, but it is also useful to the customer so they can immediately see that the object is masked/isolated correctly.

Examples

Here are some great examples of well executed items currently in our library that demonstrate a combination of excellent quality photography and clean, clear masked edges. Your submissions should try to emulate, if not surpass the quality shown below:

Street Motorcycle by yio

The qualities of good design takes years of practice and study to master–and most masters would say there is always something new to learn and improve upon. GraphicRiver maintains a high level of quality standards and acceptance for files. To be accepted on GraphicRiver, files must demonstrate the proficiency and aesthetic understanding of a professional designer. These standards go above and beyond the technical requirements of a file. To help out our authors, we’ve compiled some statements on what is considered good design and what qualities we look for in files sold on GraphicRiver. While not all files will approach these qualities and techniques in the same way, keep in mind that deficiencies in any one of these areas may be grounds for a file to be declined.

Files should be editable

The file should contain clearly labeled and organized layers to allow the buyer to edit the file for his or her needs. Depending on the file, this can include: color changes, selection/deletion/modification of elements, re-sizing or moving of elements, and other modifications. Files should use professional techniques such as masking, layer adjustments, and layer styles (for resizeable elements) when necessary. In short: use non-destructive techniques.

Files should be cohesive

If a submission contains multiple elements or is part of a set (buttons, banners, etc), all of the elements should have a cohesive overall design. Cohesive design is achieved by sharing one or more of several elements: color scheme, shape and alignment, use of white space, and other stylistic choices.

Files should demonstrate a professional understanding of design

The file should demonstrate excellent understanding and execution of basic design principles, including but not limited to: contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity, white space, etc. When considering design excellence consider the function and user-friendliness of the item. For instance, design templates should be legible. Text that is too small or ill aligned is un-acceptable. Excellent files don’t necessarily need to follow design rules to a tee–great designers know the rules so well that they know how to break them effectively–but the design standards for GraphicRiver are very high.

Files with text should be scanable

The needs of typography vary somewhat depending on the content, but all submissions with typographic layout should follow design standards for easy readability and use. Fonts should have refined tracking, leading, and font choice. Text should have thoughtfully designed alignment, use of white space, contrast, proximity and repetition in layout. Pay particular attention to the alignment of text in files–centered text is often very hard to read in large bursts and files with multiple alignments on a single page are confusing for the eye and hard to scan. Also, files aligned on a grid are often better in the sense that they are easier to interact with.

Files should have a sophisticated design sense

Design can be minimal or complex, but there should be a level of sophistication and trend awareness in the design of files approved for GraphicRiver.

Files containing common design trends should be exceptional

Styles such as bokeh, glossy buttons, gadget illustrations, grunge effects, etc can all be popular trends in design, resulting in many submissions of this type. Because of the high number of submissions, files of this type need to be exceptionally well done, attractive, or offer something unique to be added to the GraphicRiver library. Files should not copy another file in identical concept, execution, or technique.

Each marketplace category has specific upload instructions to ensure items will be accepted to the marketplace and will be as useful as possible to buyers. This article outlines the upload instructions for the GraphicRiver Keynote template category.

Step 1: Prepare Your File

Organize your design into easy to edit, clearly labeled layers–this means both your template and accompanying art files. Please remember that the more editable your file is, the more valuable it is to buyers. Double check that you’ve provided organized and clearly labeled layers, help documents, and made it as easy as possible for buyers to edit and customize your work.

Make sure you have all the information about any assets used in the file–you’ll need this later! If your assets are linked to the main file, be certain you’ve included them in your zip.

Create useful, written instructions in English for the buyer in either pdf, doc, txt, or html format. Keep in mind that buyers may have little to no familiarity with design or presentation software, so incorporate clear explanations and visuals when necessary. You may create video or flash instructions in addition to, but not instead of text instructions. Read more.

Most freebies and downloads from stock sites are not licensed for redistribution and resale.
Note: ”Commercial” licenses are NOT the same as redistribution and resale.

Do not create a file based on a tutorial.

You may not copy the design, style, or technique of files from GraphicRiver or elsewhere. There is a fine line between being inspired by another file and copying it. If you upload a file that looks too similar to another file, it will be removed and you will receive a warning.

Do not use trademarked logos or products in your file. This also includes product illustrations which include products obviously modeled after trademarked product designs. (e.g., please do not submit an illustration that is obviously an Apple iPhone or a Nintendo controller) Product illustrations must have aspects that differ noticably from the copyrighted product. Do not refer to any item in your submission as a logo.

Do not use famous landmarks, architecture, or works or art (such as the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty) that are protected under U.S. or International copyright laws.

Step 3: Upload Your Files

Title and description

Write your title and description in the text areas. Get some tips.

Click Preview Description to make sure it looks right.

Thumbnail

Create an 80 x 80 pixel jpg thumbnail.

Click Upload and select the thumbnail on your computer.

Under the word “Thumbnail”, click the dropdown and select the thumbnail.

Preview Image.

Create an 590 x 700 pixel jpg preview image. Note: files MUST be a JPG–PNGs or GIFs will not display correctly.
Tip: Read about what makes a good preview image.

Click Upload and select the preview image on your computer.

Under the words “Preview Image”, click the dropdown and select the preview image.

Presentation Screenshots

Name each screenshot in sequence as number_Title.jpg. E.g. 1_Homepage.jpg, 2_Generalpage.jpg.

Create a .TXT file containing a few lines of descriptive text, with the same name as the screenshot. E.g. 1_Homepage.txt,2_Generalpage.txt.

ZIP up the JPGs and TXTs together into a single ZIP file.

Select your file formats included in the ZIP. If you have a particular format that is not included (such as one of many varied add-on formats) please choose the software format that it would be used with.

When using images containing recognizable human faces or private locations, link to a scanned version of a filled out and signed model or location release. Read more.

Read the Disclaimer and Click the Checkbox.

Click Upload and Make Some Money! Please note that reviewing your file may take up to a week.

Each marketplace category has specific upload instructions to ensure items will be accepted to the marketplace and will be as useful as possible to buyers. This article outlines the upload instructions for the GraphicRiver isolated objects category.

Please view our Isolated Objects Quality Guidelines before creating/submitting to this category.

Clean Up Your Isolated Object: All submissions must be photographic objects only. Graphics and 3D renders will not be accepted. If you wish to submit a 3D render, please use the Graphics -> 3D Renders category instead.Follow these guidelines to create the Photoshop file containing your hi-res isolated object:

Clip or mask your object in Photoshop to fully and cleanly separate it from the background.

Place the object on it’s own layer.

If the object has a shadow, place the shadow on it’s own layer.

DO make sure the object clipping edges are smooth and clean.

DO NOT flatten your Photoshop File.

DO NOT rasterize layers unnecessarily.

DO NOT merge layers unnecessarily.

DO use non-destructive editing methods—masks, vector smart objects and other Photoshop tools—to provide the buyer with the most flexibility.

Create the Final Download File:You should create a single ZIP file that contains the final files for download, including: the hi-res JPG and layered PSD file, any documentation and any auxiliary files such as extra images or file formats. This is the file that a user will get when they buy the item. Make it as complete as possible.Optional Help File: You may if you wish include a text or PDF help file showing how the item can be used, what fonts are used or other help on customizing and using the item.

Create your Preview Image:Create a preview JPG image of the file. The preview image should be 590px wide and a static JPG saved for the web. The preview can be as vertically tall as you desire, however we recommend previews no larger than 700 pixels tall for optimal viewing. The preview should represent as much of your file as possible. A watermark will be applied automatically to the image.Note: Please use the Save for Web function in Adobe software; this strips excess information from the file and keeps the file size small. The maximum file size should be 400kb.

Create a Thumbnail:Finally create an 80px x 80px JPG or PNG thumbnail for your file. The thumbnail should represent your item in some way.Note: Please use the Save for Web function in Adobe software; this strips excess information from the file and keeps the file size small. The maximum file size should be 50kb.

Upload your files to GraphicRiver!
