One technique I like to use to improve my stock output is double dippin’. What do I mean by that? I mean do the work once and get paid for it twice or more. Here’s an example: One of my very first stock items was an illustration of a clock face. Most authors would stop there and move on to the next file. Instead, I created a Flash version of the clock. With the same graphics and similar code I built a set of Flash timezone clocks. ActionScript is pretty similar to JavaScript so I also built a Unity3d version and have a jQuery one in the works. Did I stop there? No, that same clock is on the wall of my Flash Fine Art Gallery. Did I stop there? Well… yes, but I’m sure it’ll show it’s face again on the Envato marketplaces.

You may be saying – “That’s all fine and good, but how does this apply to me?” This concept can work on just about all of the marketplaces. It even makes sense between different files on the same marketplace. Here are some double dippin’ ideas:

WordPress, HTML, and Flash Developers

1. Create customizable scrollbars, contact forms, and image galleries (in classes if you’re using Flash).
2. Reuse modified versions in every theme or template you create. If necessary, improve them, but try not to start from scratch unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Unity3d Developers & 3d Modelers

The Unity3d category on ActiveDen and the 3d Model category on 3dOcean go hand in hand. If you create a 3d model and upload it to 3dOcean, why not bring it to life in Unity and sell it on ActiveDen?

Image Galleries

1. Create your gallery.
2. Use screenshots of your other files to populate the gallery in the preview file. First of all, it makes your gallery look nice. Also, even if they don’t buy your gallery, they may still buy your other files!

Textures

Did you know that 3dOcean and GraphicRiver both sell textures? The requirements differ slightly, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t consider uploading all your textures to both sites.

For Anyone

1. Write a premium tutorial for any of the Tuts+ sites.
2. Sell that same tutorial on the Tuts Marketplace.
3. Use what you taught in the tutorial to make a file, add to it to make it unique, and sell it on ActiveDen, 3dOcean, or whatever Envato marketplace it would fit best on.

You may use trademarked names as titles and tags when they’re used:

• to describe how your file was built or what it opens with like Flash or Flex.
• to describe what’s included in the download like a PSD or FLA.
• to describe where the information is being pulled from. For example, files using the Twitter or Google API’s may use Twitter or Google as titles or tags.
• to describe code or assets being used like TweenMax or Papervision3d.

Unacceptable Tags and Title Words

You may not use trademarked names as titles or tags when using them to describe what the item is similar to. This makes searches less relevant and takes traffic away from the trademark holders. For example:

• A status update application that doesn’t use the Twitter API may not use the term Twitter.
• A vector-looking silhouette of people dancing may not use the term Apple.
• A tweening engine that doesn’t use Tweener may not use the term Tweener.
• An mp3 player may not use the term iPod.
• A race car game may not use the name of an actual car like Ferrari or Jeep.
• You may not use terms such as iPod-like, Twitter-like, or Tweener-like.

3. Create useful, written instructions in English for the buyer in either pdf, doc, txt, or html format. You may create video or flash instructions in addition to, but not instead of text instructions. Read more.

4. Do not use spaces or special characters in your file names. Use only letters, numbers, hyphens (-), and underscores(_). For example, your_image.jpg and yourImage.jpg, not your image.jpg or ~yourimage.jpg. Read more.
5. Name the items in the library.
6. Files often react differently locally and online, so be sure to test your files thoroughly on a server.
   Helpful Hint – To make your file as easy to use and customize as possible, use classes or create everything within a movieClip so it can be easily dragged’n'dropped. Also, avoid using _root in your actionscript.

Step 2: Make Sure That You and Your File Don’t Get Banned

1. Do not upload decompiled files. Authors who upload files containing signs of having been decompiled will be banned, even if the file you decompiled is your own!
2. Only use images, audio, video, and code you have the rights to use. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have the rights to use any materials. We will remove or reject your file if it violates another person’s copyright. Please review this article for more information on acceptable assets.
3. Do not create a file based on a tutorial.
4. You may not copy the design, functionality, or code of files from ActiveDen or elsewhere. There is a fine line between being inspired by another file and copying it. If you upload a file that looks too similar to another file, it will be removed and you will receive a warning.
5. Do not use trademarked logos or products in your file.

Step 3: Upload Your Files

1. Title and description
   1. Write your title and description in the text areas using proper naming convention. Read more.
2. Thumbnail
   1. Create an 80 x 80 pixel jpg or png thumbnail.
   2. Click Upload and select the thumbnail on your computer.
   3. Under the word “Thumbnail”, click the dropdown and select the thumbnail.
3. Preview Image - fullscreen previews only.
   1. Create an 590 x 300 pixel jpg preview image.
   2. Click Upload and select the preview image on your computer.
   3. Under the words “Preview Image”, click the dropdown and select the preview image.
4. Preview Source
   1. Name your main swf preview.swf (case sensitive).
   2. If you’re not uploading a fullscreen preview, make sure your preview.swf is 590 x 300 pixels.
   3. If you’re uploading a fullscreen preview, name your html page index.html (case sensitive).
   4. If your preview can’t show the true functionality, fake it. If your file is a preloader and you want the potential buyer to see it more than once without having to clear their cache, make the preview a looping animation rather than an actual preloader.
   5. Unfortunately, previews may not use PHP or any other server-side script. Any PHP functionality must be stripped out for the preview. For example, if your file calls dynamic content from a database, for the preview, call static content instead.
   6. Zip up all the needed preview files (no source, please) and name it preview.zip.
   7. Click Upload and select preview.zip on your computer.
   8. Under the word “Preview Source”, click the dropdown and select the preview.zip.
5. Main Files
   1. Zip (not Rar) all the files the buyer will need, including all the source and instructions, and name it main.zip. Please note that all source is required, including your component’s source.
      Note: All files meant to be deployed on the web now require a sample .html page.
   2. Click Upload and select main.zip on your computer.
   3. Under the word “Main File(s)” click the dropdown and select main.zip.
   Helpful Hint – To save time, instead of uploading your thumbnail, preview image, preview source, and main files individually, you can upload them all at once. Just click upload and ctrl+click all the files.
6. Categories & Attributes
   1. Select a category.
   2. Write the published size of your main swf. ex: 23kb, 1mb.
   3. Select what version of Flash your file opens with.
   4. If your file is a fixed size, write the resolution, in pixels, in the text box under where it says “Resolution”.
   5. If your file is resizable, select “Resizable” from the dropdown.
   6. Select your actionscript version(s).
   Helpful Hint – Providing multiple actionscript versions and saving your file to an older Flash version will increase the number of potential buyers.
7. Tags
   1. Write relevant tags, separated by commas, in each of the three tag fields. Please note that tags may contain multiple words. ex: “deep-linking” or “contact module.” Read more.
   2. Make sure each tag is spelled correctly.
   3. Limit your tags across all three categories to 15 total, not 15 per category.
   Helpful Hint – Effective and relevant tagging can make the difference between 10 and 100 sales. Put yourself in the shoes of a potential buyer looking for your file. Try to imagine what they’d search for. Ask the people around you what they would search for.
8. Notes to the Reviewer
   1. When using images containing recognizable human faces or private locations, link to a scanned version of a filled out and signed model or location release. Read more.
